Alice in
Murderland was funny because it utilized Bergson's comic
techniques caricature and incongruity. Alice in Murderland's
poor costume design results in the exaggeration of the characters in
Alice in Wonderland which is an example of the comic technique
caricature. Due to a poor script some of the scenes do not match up
and the incongruity is hilarious. Alice in Murderland by
Dennis Devine inadvertently utilizes the comic techniques caricature,
and incongruity to entertain the audience.
Were there any other
comic techniques in the movie? What were they and how did they come
about?
Emily: I never really thought about the comic techniques and how they make a movie funny.
ReplyDeleteEvan: “Based on True Events” Yeah, when the Jabberwocky flies(Alice in Murderland).
ReplyDeleteJohn: Overall, the movie idea is absurd. When the movie tried to tell the audience it was a true story I fell out of my chair laughing. After watching the movie, no one in their right mind would believe that a group of college sorority girls would host a turning twenty one party in a random warehouse with no boys and no alcohol. The plot isn't realistic enough for it to be plausible. Along with the plot being absurd, the acting make no sense. The characters were all monotone and did not bring much enthusiasm to their parts. As a result the characters turn into these robot like characters repeating their lines. At first I found this to be comical, but half way through the film I got tired of it. An example of the monotone was when Alice's ex-boyfriend is talking to the Jabberwocky. He says “do you want me to spill my guts, more, ok Alice I will spill more of my guts to you”(Alice in Murderland). Without the monotone voice the scene would have been much more emotional rather that adding make the audience think 'What the hell is going on?'
ReplyDeleteBethany:
ReplyDeleteYes, that is what makes it funny, John. It is absurd!
Eric, could you please explain more about how the movie showed caricature and incongruity in the movie? I understood how absurd the movie was, but I cannot figure out how it has to do with those two techniques.
